An editioned version of an early book, Tool Box layers text and imagery to present a complex, non-linear narrative that hints at a disturbing justification for postponing personal problem resolution. This book with its terse phrasing and difficult imagery speaks eloquently to those able to understand the author’s position.

The poem Tongue Tied by Patricia Beers describes the almost unbearable results of a lifetime of keeping silent. The two-sided accordian book is hinge-bound with 16 penny nails and housed in a nail/mesh and wood structure. Unless handled carefully this book can easily cause physical injury and pain.

Text is laserprint on lace paper. Alicia Bailey’s photographs, which allude to bondage and repression, are inkjet printed on sumi paper. Objects and text initially hidden by the photographs are revealed as the reader interacts with this book.

Based on the traditional instructional pillow books given couples on their wedding night, this two-sided accordion contains 6 sexually explicit watercolors paired with 6 physical and spiritual descriptions of the ‘embraces of love’ taken from ancient Asian texts.

Alicia Bailey, introduction: “This project is the result of an intermingling of stories told by those who have been struck by a sensation of instant connection with another. In the classical world such pricks from a dart of Eros were called Theia Mania (madness of the gods). Heidi Zednik and I began by collecting audio version of stories told by those willing to participate in the project. We recorded 12 such stories and these are the basis for both the text and audio portions of this piece. Two of the stories I wished to include could not be told by their subjects, so I wrote my own versions, presented as oral presentations on the CD.”

Printing techniques: laser etching, color laser print, color inkjet print, black and white laser print, laserprinted metal foil, and relief printing.

A short story by Jocelyn Bailey tells of a woman’s transformation within 4 walls of a humble cottage. Accordian book of 32 pages is laserprinted on 90# Arches. Color inkjets on tissue from original paintings by Alicia Bailey are tipped in. Cover is soft unryu over museum board with ribbon and shell closure. Box is flocked in black velvet.

Tanka is a Japanese poetic form that has existed for over 1300 years. Longer than haiku, tanka allows for deeper thought and expression of themes. Tankas were originally used as a way of  expressing private emotions between lovers and friends. Each wall of the box is a small book with tanka poems and watercolor paintings by Alicia Bailey. The pages are color laserprint on Mohawk Superfine text.
